DATEC (Fiji) Pte Ltd and the Fiji Meteorological Services (FMS) have announced the successful implementation of a digital initiative designed to improve FMS’ responsiveness and efficiency in mitigating downtime risks and enhancing service delivery during extreme weather events.
The new digital recovery system ensures national resilience and operational continuity towards aligning FMS’ services in digital governance and infrastructure resilience.
FMS director Misaeli Funaki said the implementation marked a significant leap forward for Fiji’s meteorological body.
“This project isn’t just about infrastructure; it’s about modernization at its core. It represents a profound shift in how we operate, how we serve, and most importantly, how we protect our communities,” Mr Funaki said
“This new system ensures we remain fully operational during emergencies, directly supporting our broader mission to safeguard lives and property.”
Mr Funaki said the initiative signifies a decisive step towards strengthening Fiji’s climate resilience, ensuring uninterrupted access to essential meteorological services even in the most challenging circumstances.
“The newly deployed, robust, and geographically redundant disaster recovery environment is engineered to maintain system uptime and protect vital data, enhancing FMS’ ability to efficiently manage and analyse meteorological data, leading to faster response times and more accurate public advisories.”
Datec Fiji chief executive officer Vinit Nand said the partnership with FMS was of national importance.
“This isn’t just a project for us; it’s a testament to the powerful synergy that can be achieved when a government body with a crucial mandate collaborates closely with a dedicated local partner,” he said.
He said FMS has been crucial in ensuring the success of the new system, with Datec providing support to advance the digital solution.
The new system reinforces FMS’ broader movement toward sustainable, tech-enabled public services, promising a more connected, secure and prepared Fiji.
