Devotees prepare for prayer ceremony

HINDU devotees will gather at the Waiyavi Kaliamman Kovil temple in Lautoka this weekend to mark the end of one of their biggest prayer ceremonies for the year.

Temple committee president Krishna Sami said the pooja, which took ten days to complete, will culminate with a tirikutu naach and firewalking.

“We always have huge crowds at this event because it is the first pooja in the South Indian calendar for Lautoka,” he said.

“We are expecting another huge turnout this year and are extending our invitation this weekend to people of all races and religious beliefs to join us at the temple.”

The tirikutu naach is a traditional dance performed by male members of the temple who depict Hindu gods and goddesses in scenes from religious stories.
