VITI Roofing Devo Babas, champions of the 2024/2025 Fiji Bitter 7s series, will participate in a three-day tournament in Papua New Guinea, starting today.
The team will play in the 2025 NiuPower KMHL Sports Tok Rugby 7s tournament at the Santos National Football Stadium and Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby.
They are a part of 28 teams competing in the senior men’s division, along with 10 women and 16 under-20 teams.
The Devo Babas team is in PNG as one of two Fijian sides at the tournament in line with the commemoration and celebration of PNG’s 50th independence anniversary this year.
Women’s team Tagimoucia Ranadi is the other Fijian team taking part.
It’s the most recent outing for the Fiji Bitter 7s champions, after cementing a dynamic winning streak in the Wairiki, Labasa, Savusavu, Tabadamu, Nawaka and Marist legs.
Getting the team to PNG meant fundraising for it through a kava barrel in Namaka, Nadi and this was in the form of a “Blue Note Night” where attendees paid $20 to help raise funds for the trip.
The invitation to the event was announced on the team’s official Facebook page.
Meanwhile, with a change of scenery from tournaments around Fiji and thrust into the level of competition that awaits them in PNG, they enter with an edge over the other 27 teams in the senior men’s division.
On their official Facebook page, supporters of the team in PNG have extended their support towards the visiting ruggers ahead of the three-day meet.
