The Devo Babas successfully defended the men’s cup title of the 2026 Sports Tok Niu Power KMHL 7s with a clinical 22-12 victory over PC Ravens in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea last weekend.
Speaking from PNG, head coach Viliame Ratute told Times Sport this year’s competition was significantly tougher compared to their debut campaign.
“It was easy for us last year, but this time the level of competition has really lifted. The way the local teams play rugby has improved, and we felt that in our matches,” Ratute said.
Despite the increased intensity, the Babas executed their game plan with precision to reclaim the title, underlining their growing reputation as one of Fiji’s elite sevens sides.
Ratute highlighted the tournament also served as an eye-opener for several players who were experiencing international rugby for the first time. However, managing the team’s mental focus proved to be a key challenge.
“During our devotion on Sunday (last week) morning, we realised it was Resurrection Sunday back in Fiji, and for many Christians it’s a day of worship,” he said.
“I reminded the boys that the talent they have is God-given, and they should use it well as part of that blessing. After that, we went out and they gave their best right through to the final.”
The Babas showed resilience in the decider, with only nine players available after two squad members were injured from earlier matches.
Ratute commended his players for their determination and discipline until the final whistle, while also acknowledging their opponents.
“PC Ravens are a strong side and former back-to-back champions as well. We’re grateful to them for such a tough and competitive final,” he said.
He also assured families back home the team remains safe in PNG and is expected to return to Fiji this Sunday.
