The McDonald’s talent development league competition kicked off its round one of matches at the Fiji FA Academy grounds in Vatuwaqa last Saturday, with the Suva under-12 team displaying exceptional performance by winning both their matches in this round. They defeated Rewa 3-0 and Navua 1-0.

This competition will span five weeks for the U10, U12, and U14 age groups, with teams from the Western, Southern, and Northern regions also participating.

Everyone is eagerly anticipating the McDonald’s Inter-District competition, scheduled to take place during the second term of the school break.

Suva’s head coach and Fiji futsal national coach, Jerry Sam, mentioned that this year the Suva teams have undergone thorough preparation.

He stated that he is assisting the kids by imparting basic football skills and that they are displaying great talent.

Sam emphasised the need to guide these young players towards becoming the best in the future.

“We got a lot of talent in the team’s not only from Suva but Navua and Rewa as well, so we need to guide at this age to be the best in the future,” said Sam.

Despite winning against Navua, the boys lost focus in their second match after their initial victory, leading to a closer scoreline.

“Looking at the match against Navua the boys lost focus on the game after winning in the first match against Rewa 3-0, they relaxed a lot in the match I think we could have got more points but all in all they did their best.”

Sam highlighted the importance of learning from mistakes and improving for future matches.

He expressed gratitude towards the parents and children who attended in large numbers, showcasing their passion for the sport.
