Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) Board chairman John Sanday is eagerly anticipating an exciting match as the Fiji Water Flying Fijians prepare to face Canada in the semi-final of the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Denver, Colorado, USA.
Both Fiji and Canada have already secured their places in the Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027, adding an extra layer of significance to this upcoming showdown between the two teams.
Sanday expresses his excitement for the match, emphasising the continuous growth and development of the Fijian team as they strive towards the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.
He sees each match as a crucial step in their journey, acknowledging the inevitable challenges and setbacks that come with such aspirations.
“Each match is a step to our Rugby World Cup preparation, and like any plans we going to go through the trials, sometimes some things don’t work, but those are just a learning curve, that we have to go through,” said Sanday.
“The main thing is what we have shown in the last two games, we can dig ourselves out of a losing situation to finally win the game, and that’s a big statement, that is the underpinning foundation of this team.”
“As defenders of the Pacific Nations Cup we know it won’t be easy, but I believe the team has shown their hard work on the field, and we know it will be a great match for all to watch.”
The chairman is proud of the Flying Fijians’ ability to overcome adversity, citing their recent victories as a testament to their resilience and determination.
“We are excited for the match against Canada, and we are looking forward to seeing the learning and the ongoing strength of our Flying Fijian team, how they can bring it all together.
“As we know Canada is also qualified for the Rugby World Cup, it’s good to see them back in the Rugby World Cup, we have been away too long, it’s good to see the Canadian rugby risers, to the level.”
While recognising Canada’s return to the Rugby World Cup, Sanday acknowledges the progress of Canadian rugby and anticipates a challenging game against them.
He calls for strong support from fans and supporters, both locally and abroad, to rally behind the team in their quest for victory.
The Flying Fijians will play Canada at 12.35pm next Monday.
