REGULAR planned maintenance works is key to economic progress, says Denarau Corporation Pte Ltd (DCL) general manager Nesbitt Hazelman.

Responding to concerns raised about the recent wastewater leak along the Navakai to Denarau corridor in Nadi, Mr Hazelman said while these regular works were needed, utility providers were also constantly under pressure to service the public.

“… the current bust is off island, around 250 metres from the entry bridge on the swamp side,” he said.

“DCL continues to work closely with WAF, EFL and (Fiji) Roads Authority to ensure that stakeholders on the island are well informed of any disruptions that may be encountered during the repair works which has started (August 20) morning.

“We are of the view that infrastructure, whether it be new builds to support a particular area or regular planned repair and maintenance, is key to economic progress; it only helps support activity on the ground.

“We fully understand and appreciate the pressure that is exerted on the utility providers to provide uninterrupted services as they have their own unique challenges and priorities to deal with.”

Mr Hazelman said this was not the first time the reported leaks have happened and major stakeholders have been able to adjust and manage their operations.

“This is not the first event, and we all understand that it is an aging infrastructure and that Government has now committed funds to replace the current aging infrastructure.

“DCL currently manages and funds all infrastructure on the island while the utility providers are responsible for all infrastructure off the island; we have over the past few years developed a strong professional working relationship with our utility providers.”
