“WE are in good hands.”

These are the words of Suva Grammar School athletics coach Jone Delai as the 2024 Coca-Cola Games starts today at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

One hundred and fourteen athletes are representing SGS in the most anticipated event of the Fiji Secondary Schools calendar in this term.

Of the 114, 64 are in the boys division and 50 in the girls category.

“Right now we are just settling in well, everybody just enjoying the environment and we are ready,” the former Fijian sprinter said.

“At the zone we really just wanted to gauge our fitness level, there were a lot of positives from the zone so, we are in good hands.”

At the Suva Zone 2, SGS took out the girls division with 33 gold while their boys settled for second.

Their girls are up for a tough challenge with experts saying it will be a three-way competition in the Fiji Finals.

“Statistics wise whoever gets nine or 10 gold will win. We have us, ACS and MGM, not forgetting other schools who will spoil the party, which is very normal.

“These are schools like Jasper Williams, Natabua High School, Sigatoka Methodist and Holy Cross College who are underdogs over the years,” Delai added.

The last time SGS had its hands on a title was in 2022 in the boys division.

Last year, they came close in the girls division, settling for second place, short only of two gold medals.
