FORMER Fiji sprinter Jone Delai and former New Zealand netball rep Vilimaina Davu were inducted to the Fiji Sports Hall of Fame at the Novotel Convention Centre in Lami last night.
Delai was recognised for his achievements in athletics over a span of 17 years in which he ruled the tracks in Pacific in the blue ribbon event.
Delai is recognised as Fiji’s most outstanding athletes and the only Fijian sprinter to qualify under the ‘A’ standard for any Olympic Games.
Davu, who first played for Fiji and then the Silver Ferns, was recognised as Fiji’s most successful netballer with an international career spanning over a decade.
She also coached the national side.
The Fiji Sports Hall Of Fame was inaugurated in 1990 by the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC), as an everlasting tribute to sportsmen and sportswomen of Fiji.
The Hall of Fame acknowledges and honours Fiji’s super athletes who for over 75 years have competed in Fiji and abroad against the best in the world.
Many have excelled and brought glory and fame to themselves, their sport and to Fiji as a nation and deserve to be recognised and remembered by the people of Fiji.
Each year nominations are called for from National Sporting bodies and members of the general public.
FASANOC is grateful to those who support this prestigious awards recognition initiative.
The selection of the successful candidates is the responsibility of an independent panel of judges, whose decision is final.
The panel of judges includes Vanessa Kilner, Fenella David and Elia Vesikula.
Thirty nine “all time Fiji sporting greats” have been inducted into the Fiji Sports Hall Of Fame.
Meanwhile, Bobby Tikaram and Chris Yee were the recipients of the 2014 Fiji Olympic Order.
