Fiji Airways Fiji men’s 7s head coach Osea Kolinisau’s emphasis on defence is clearly reflected in his squad selection for the second leg of the HSBC SVNS series.
The two new additions to the team are highly skilled defensive players, each bringing unique qualities that are vital to maintaining the team’s defensive solidity and aggression throughout the tournament.
Since joining the national sevens setup, Douglass Daveta has distinguished himself as an exceptional defensive organiser, confidently managing his sweeping responsibilities and adeptly anticipating offensive kicking strategies, all while delivering top-class playmaking skills.
Nacani Bogonisoko’s aggressive defence and outstanding work rate will add much-needed physicality to the team, particularly in the upfront battles.
“Douglass has really stood out after bringing him in after the Skipper Cup then bringing him into training, very sound in defence, very vocal as a sweeper at the back which is something I really like for the person controlling the backfield and marshalling the forwards,” Kolinisau explained.
Meanwhile, Boginisoko’s aggressive defence and superior workrate have made him a great addition to the team’s defensive strategies.
After an extended spell in the national team’s wider squad, Kolinisau believes the Dominion Brothers player is ready for his national debut.
“He’s been in the program since last season who didn’t get a chance, he’s someone who is really sound in defence. Naca likes the physical part of the game and he’s someone we know is quiet but has a similar playing style to Joji Nasova. But one thing about Naca is he is someone who just works hard on defence,” he explained.
Fiji kicks off their title defence at 4.32pm this Saturday against Great Britain before facing Spain at 7.58pm.
They will wrap up their pool games against South Africa at 11.46pm.
