Defence will be a crucial factor for Extra Bula FC as they face South Island United in their second OFC Pro League match today at Eden Park, New Zealand.
Coached by former Fiji national team coach Rob Sherman, South Island United has developed an attacking style of play that is expected to challenge the Stephane Auvray coached side’s defensive strategies.
Goalkeeper Didier Desprez emphasised the importance of communication in their defensive approach against the Australian side.
Speaking through translator Kaile Auvray, Desprez said,
“Communication is very essential. So far, it’s been good. The communication with the boys has been strong.”
Auvray added, “He’s been able to help the team anticipate certain plays, and they’ve been very reactive. For the most part, it’s been very efficient.”
Meanwhile, the team’s youngest player, 16-year-old Maikah Dau, is looking forward to his second professional match. Having made a confident debut, Dau hopes to build on his performance from the first game.
“For me, no matter how many minutes I get to play tomorrow, I’ll go out there and work on improving the things I lacked in the last game, giving my 100%,” he said.
When asked how he manages the expectations placed on him, Dau replied,
“I just try to enjoy the game and not feel any pressure. I focus on going out there and enjoying the experience.”
