Police have confirmed they are aware of a new deep fake scam circulating online but say no formal complaint has been received.
This comes in the wake of an online video circulating on social media platforms purporting to show Reserve Bank of Fiji (RBF) governor Ariff Ali and a local news anchor promoting a get-rich quick investment scheme.
“Yes, the Cybercrime Unit and the Online Safety Commission are aware of it, but no one has formally registered a complaint,” said police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro.
“This would be the first, however, with the previous case we had, the public were told through Messenger to make a video of them saying they had invested online and the return was successful.
“The video was then shared on some genuine accounts which had been hacked by the scammer.”
In a statement on Tuesday, the bank said the video was fabricated.
“The video appears to have been generated using artificial intelligence and is spreading misleading information,” the RBF said.
“The RBF does not have an investment platform for the public that trades automatically.”
Television and news platform Fiji One News also issued a statement confirming the manipulated video was “not produced, authorised, or endorsed” by them.
