THE Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) will follow due process and will not be pressured into coming to a decision on new bus fares.

Commission chief executive officer Joel Abraham yesterday said the FCCC would not cut corners or expedite the process just because the bus industry was putting pressure on the commission.

Mr Abraham said they had met members of the Fiji Bus Operators Association and told them about the principles of transparency.

He said some of the bus companies had said they did not have the money to continue running the business.

“People have said this previously and continued to run the business.

“I think it’s just the matter of managing things properly and I think at times they need to be guided in the right manner.

“You have to recognise that some of these businesses have been family run for years and they do not have proper governance system in place as you would expect larger ones to have.

“A lot more guidance is needed in ensuring that they meet all their debt governance and their commitments,” he said.

He said with school starting next week, the commission’s major focus was to ensure public transportation was available.

According to Mr Abraham one of the major problems with the review process is that previously there was no set mechanism on how bus fare reviews should be carried out.

He said it was important to get the model right so that it could have mechanisms to allow for reviews.
