The Savura Women’s Development team has made a stunning impact in their first National Club Championship by advancing to the quarterfinals.
Revived in 2022, the team is comprised mainly of students aged 16 to 19 from Suva Grammar School, alongside other secondary school girls in Suva who were eager to play but had no club affiliation.
The team builds on the legacy of the Savura Volleyball Club, one of Suva’s oldest clubs from the 1980s, and is coached by Silvia Masi.
Originally formed as a village team from Tamavua Village, Naitaisiri, Savura Development expanded to welcome young players from across the city, creating a strong development pathway.
Several players, including Kelera Koroi and Valarie Daunicakacaka, have gone on to represent Fiji at the Pacific Mini Games, highlighting the team’s growing influence.
In the championship, Savura Development topped Pool 5 undefeated, defeating Nanaimo Smashers (2-0), Mighty Heights (2-1), and No Fear (2-0).
The young new-comers had everyone in awe displaying top tier volleyball skills with a disciplined teamwork effort.
The team lost to a seasoned Phoenix Volleyball Team in the quarterfinals, a top contender in Suva Volleyball at the semi-finals.
The Savura squad, with just nine players, has shown remarkable promise and resilience.
Savura Development’s success in their first championship signals a bright future for women’s volleyball in Suva and the region.
