THE youngest victim of child abuse reported last year was just a day old, says Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran.
Ms Kiran said the baby was part of the 50 per cent of abuse cases that involved children under the age of 12.
“These numbers clearly show that our children are in danger from drugs and violence,” she said.
She urged the nation to take action, warning that the country was failing its children and needed to rise collectively to protect them.
“Education and awareness are essential. What this (Duavata Crime Preventional) carnival is doing across communities and schools is a strong starting point.”
She appealed to parents and grandparents to spend just 20 minutes with their children each morning and evening.
“We must urgently develop prevention committees to protect children.”
Ms Kiran added that simple daily check-ins could help detect early signs of distress or substance abuse.
“Financial stress and family breakdowns are challenges, but with commitment, we can change that.”
She said the role of open communication and strong family support were essential keys in keeping children safe.
