New Fiji 7s captain Tevita Daugunu believes the team has what it takes to claim the Singapore title on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series this weekend.
Speaking to The Straits Times earlier this week, Daugunu said fans could expect the same flair and flavour from the revamped team in coach Ben Gollings’ first major assignment, after the Fijians missed the last two legs of the series in Spain in January due to a spate of COVID-19 cases.
“Our fans back home and around the world, they don’t care if there’s a new captain of this team or it’s a new squad,” said the 29-year-old, who was not among those at the Olympics. “All they want is a win. So we will make sure we will deliver.”
The Fiji squad will feature only three of their gold-medal winning side from the Tokyo Olympics in Jerry Tuwai, Josua Vakurinabili and Waisea Nacuqu.
Fiji won the Singapore 7s in 2018 but failed to retain their title in 2019.
Fiji’s games: Saturday, April 9 2.22pm Ireland v Fiji 5.06pm France v Fiji 8.22pm Japan v Fiji
