“I am not giving up on you.”

This was the promise Shania Estelle gave her mother Reshma Dutt after she was diagnosed with cervical cancer.

The 21-year-old yesterday shared her experiences of how she defied all odds and gave her mother the love and care she deserved.

“From day one, my duty was to ensure that my mother was OK,” she said.

“At times I often wondered if I had become a pest asking her every now and then if she was well and attending to all her whims.”

Ms Estelle said the fear of losing her mother haunted her every day.

“I was worried about losing my mother to this disease but I was going to be strong for her and not let it separate us as a family.

“I am thankful to God for reaching out into her life and healing her.”

Sharing her experience during the launch of the Gynaecological Month yesterday, Ms Dutt said even though she did not panic when she received results of her diagnosis in December 2015, she was very worried about the future of her children.

She said the most reassuring gift during what she termed her “dark hours” was the support she received from her family members.

“My advice to women is to seek medical help if they feel that they are not well,” she said.

“Do not wait for cancer to visit you, take yourself to a gynaecologist or health centre for a Pap smear and check-up.”
