Every day we read about climate change and we all think carbon or carbon dioxide is doing all the changes.
But have we ever thought about the bunker fuel which is industrial diesel oil (IDO) which is being used by the big passenger liners and freighters.
This fuel is very high in sulphur content and when it burns it emits sulphur which mixes with oxygen in the atmospere and becomes sulphur dioxide (SO2) which, when it rains, becomes sulphuric acid (H2SO4).
This sulphuric acid is more dangerous than carbon.
It not only pollutes the atmosphere but affects human beings such as skin disease, cancer, lungs, etc.
Measures should be put into place to avoid the use of bunker fuels when the ships are near any island including the two main ones.
These ships also carry lighter fuels (ADO) which they can switch to when they approach any island.
Ports authority should provide power grids at every wharf so that the big ships switch to electric power from the grids rather than run on bunker fuel.
This is what our government has to look at if we are really serious about climate change and in line with the policies of countries such as America, Australia and New Zealand.
