THE American ambassador to Fiji Marie Damour has urged everyone to reflect on the principles of democracy, equality, and freedom, and what they meant to them.

Speaking at the launch of the US Embassy’s “America 250” series in Suva on US Constitution Day, she also urged everyone to consider how they can contribute to the ideals of democracy, equality, and freedom.

“As we launch the “America 250″ series today (Thursday), I encourage you to reflect on what these principles mean to you,” Ms Damour said.

“How can we, as individuals and as a community, contribute to the ideals of democracy, equality, and freedom?

“To quote the Apostle Paul: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up”.

“These words remind us that the work of building a better world is never finished, but it is always worth the effort.”

She challenged the young people to think deeply about what freedom and democracy meant to them and to their communities.

“You are tomorrow’s leaders; more importantly, you are tomorrow’s citizens, and your voices and actions will shape the future.”

Ms Damour also emphasised that democracy was not a “spectator sport”.

“It requires active involvement by citizens — by each one of us.”
