A damaging heavy swell alert remains in force for the open waters of southwest Viti Levu, Lau waters, the Koro Sea and the Kadavu Passage, according to the Fiji Meteorological Service.

In a special weather bulletin issued at 4.30am today, forecasters said a high-pressure system southeast of Fiji is expected to generate and direct damaging heavy swells over Fiji’s open waters.

The weather office predicts heavy swells with heights of up to 4.5 metres and wave periods of up to 18 seconds will begin developing from Thursday.

Forecast confidence is rated moderate to high.

Mariners and those using small vessels are being urged to exercise extreme caution, as wave heights could at times be double the significant wave heights forecast.

Authorities are advising sea users to closely monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions before venturing out to sea.
