AN exciting twist has been unveiled for the prestigious McDonald’s Coral Coast 7s.
Local coach David Dakuitoga has been appointed as the coaching understudy to legendary sevens coach Mike Friday.
Dakuitoga is no stranger to success at Lawaqa Park given that in 2013, he famously guided Yamacia to a thrilling victory, snatching the prestigious i-Wau Trophy from the Army 7s team in a final still talked about by fans today. Now, more than a decade later, he returns to the Coral Coast 7s arena with renewed momentum and fresh triumphs.
Most recently, Dakuitoga led the Navosa 15s team to secure promotion into the 2026 Skipper Cup, showcasing his ability to develop talent, unite squads, and deliver results under pressure.
His appointment as understudy is both a recognition of his proven expertise and a strategic opportunity to work alongside and learn from one of rugby’s most decorated sevens coaches.
His addition to Mike Friday’s selects-side adds local expertise and leadership to one of the tournament’s most anticipated invitational teams.
Coach Friday has welcomed this edition to his renowned and anticipates some game changing insights from Dakuitoga.
“David brings deep knowledge of Fijian rugby, strong leadership, and a winning mindset,” Friday said.
“I’m excited to blend his local insight with our international experience.”
This exciting announcement marks another step forward in the tournament’s commitment to excellence and rugby development in Fiji.
