THE National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO) issued a strong advisory calling for the suspension of all outdoor sports and recreational activities until the weather improves.
This directive comes as Tropical Cyclone Vaianu intensified into a category two cyclone yesterday from Tropical Depression 11F, which battered the country with persistent rainfall, thunderstorms, and hazardous conditions over the weekend.
Current weather challenges include slippery and unsafe playing surfaces, reduced visibility, increased risk of lightning strikes, and localised flooding in low-lying areas.
In light of these risks, event organisers, relevant authorities, and the public are urged to prioritise safety and exercise caution.
In a related move prioritising public safety, the Fiji Sports Council has announced the closure of all its facilities until further notice.
The decision follows the latest advisory from the National Weather Forecasting Centre and aims to protect athletes, users, and stakeholders from dangers posed by strong winds, heavy rain, and potential flooding affecting various parts of the country.
“Your safety comes first — fields, courts, and facilities can wait,” the Fiji Sports Council emphasised in its statement on social media.
Updates regarding the reopening of facilities will be provided once conditions are deemed safe to resume operations.
The Fiji NDRMO will continue to closely monitor the situation and issue updates as necessary, urging everyone to stay informed through official weather channels.
Meanwhile, all schools around the country remain closed today.
