A large number of people have been gathering outside the Immigration Department in Suva this week, only to be turned away just before the office opened for business.
Frustrated customers, some who have spent their hard earned money on transportation costs, were frustrated the department did not place any advisory on its website or on the outside walls of the building.
“We come in very early, wait for hours, only to be told the machine is not operating,” a customer who wanted to renew his passport said.
“This is an office performing a very important service so they should have taken the effort to alert the public so we won’t waste time and money.”
A department employee told the crowd this morning that signs would be put up today and that machines would be ready next Wednesday.
Questions sent to Director Immigration Amelia Komaisavai yesterday remained unanswered.
