Cultural outreach

Seasea Misiki has been actively raising awareness on cultural preservation in preparation for the inaugural Fiji Pageant next month.

The 21-year-old 2015 Bula Festival winner has been holding community outreach programs over the past few weeks, teaching young and old alike about masi printing.

An art form she learned from her maternal family of Yadrana Village in Lakeba, Lau, Ms Misiki said learning these traditional skills from an early age was a form of preserving the iTaukei culture.

“I talked about this at the Bula Festival as well and for me it came from a place where I was a living example of what the iTaukei can do to preserve our culture,” she said.

“Masi is a symbol of our culture and it is important, so for this skill to be passed down from generation to generation is very important.”

She held a public workshop at the Nadi Civic Centre yesterday where she demonstrated the different processes involved in masi making.

“Right now I’m working with the Nadi Town Council to learn more about Nadi Town, its history and all of the important things to know about our town.

“I’ve learnt a lot so far and it’s been a very interesting educational journey.

“I’m representing Nadi Town and the support of the people of Nadi would really help me in my work and these initiatives that I am doing for our town.”
