The crew of the De Chan number 44 vessel were left stranded after it ran aground on Mabulica reef near Gau island on Wednesday.
Fiji Maritime Surveillance and Rescue Coordination Centre director Lieutenant Commander Sairusi Colati confirmed all the crew were safe and that efforts were being made to transport them from the site.
“It’s a long-line vessel,” said Commander Colati.
“We didn’t conduct rescue operations over the weekend, but there was a group of fishermen on Gau whose vessel ran aground at Mabulica reef, near the village of Vione.
“We received a report early this morning (yesterday), so the incident might have happened last night (Sunday night).
“We have yet to confirm the number of people on board, but no one was hurt, everyone is still on the vessel.”
Commander Colati said discussions were also underway with the vessel’s agents.
“Everyone is safe on board the vessel, but we are coordinating with another vessel to transfer the crew on board. Salvaging operations are also underway.
“We are also coordinating with MSAF (Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji) regarding the oil spill near the vessel.”
MSAF CEO Joeli Cawaki said he was unaware of the incident or if MSAF was conducting inspections on any possible oil spills near the vessel.
