Families waiting for the opening of the long-anticipated gas crematorium at Tuatua, Labasa, will have to wait a few more months, as work on the facility remains incomplete.

The crematorium, which was expected to open in December last year, is still awaiting final installation, with no definite completion date announced.

Multi-Ethnic Affairs Minister Charan Jeath Singh said major construction work had already been completed.

“The building is complete, and the gas unit is already at the site,” he said.

However, Mr Singh said the project could not move forward without specialised technicians from India.

“We are waiting for technicians from India to install the equipment. Once that is done, phase one of the project will be completed.”

He said the second phase would focus on access to the facility.

“Phase two involves constructing a driveway from the site to the main road.”

The facility would be officially opened once both phases are completed

The Government provided over $250,000 for the construction of the gas crematorium.
