Five-year-old Shravya Shaanvi Chand of Vashist Muni Memorial Primary School in Navua turned heads at her school’s Library Week celebrations last Friday when she walked into the character parade wearing a costume made entirely of old newspapers.

Her mother, Vishna Chand, shared that the unique outfit took two hours to design and was a labour of love and creativity.

“She saw me working with the paper and got inspired,” Ms Chand said.

“She wanted to wear something unique that no one else would think of, so the old newspapers became her special costume.”

She the costume was more than just a creative project.

“Since newspapers are full of stories, we thought it would be fun to wear stories instead of just reading them. It was our way of showing that even old things like newspapers can become something beautiful and fun,” she said.

The design also carried a deeper meaning.

It included a picture of the Minister of Education Aseri Radrodro to symbolise the connection between newspapers, learning, and leadership.

“Education shapes children’s futures, and we wanted to honour the person who represents it,” she said.

The ensemble even featured an umbrella made from newspapers, representing how education and information shield and guide people in life.

Shravya proudly wore her costume on that day, reminding everyone that creativity and recycling can go hand-in-hand in sharing powerful messages about sustainability and education.
