Fiji’s Ministry of Education has issued a statement to say that all schools nationwide will remain closed.

It was responding to a number of social media posts recently regarding schools being reopened.

“Schools will re-open for face-to-face classes and classroom teaching when we are once again COVID-contained,” Minister Rosy Akbar said.

She urged parents and students to disregard unofficial comments circulating on social media and follow the announcements from the ministry.

“It is rather unfortunate that some people are taking advantage of the current situation and spreading false and misleading information.

“At a time like this, we need people to support each other, especially our children who are more vulnerable.

“Providing misleading information will continue to emotionally impact our children who are already affected by the school closure. I urge the public to be a little more sensitive and supportive during these unprecedented times.”

She said the ministry would continue to provide correct information to all teachers, students and parents through the media.

On May 22, on its social media Facebook page, the ministry had announced that schools would reopen on June 21.
