Fiji Police says it will leave the matter of a viral video on social media showing a large gathering at Lautoka hospital earlier this week that breached physical distancing measures to the Ministry of Health and Medical Services.

The video showed Lautoka hospital staff celebrating the release of the country’s first COVID-19 patients.

The footage depicted a large gathering in which the physical distancing principles advocated by the ministry were not observed.

Commissioner of Police Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho said that was being dealt with by the ministry’s Human Resource Department that had been instructed to convene a panel to conduct a disciplinary investigation.

Yesterday, Ministry of Health permanent secretary Bernadette Welch said to say they were disappointed was an understatement.

She said she had advised all Divisional Medical Officers and Medical Superintendents to remind their staff that there would be zero tolerance for any violations of health protection measures within the ministry.

Ms Welch said she had also instructed the Head of Human Resources to convene an investigation panel with a majority of external members to conduct a disciplinary investigation, consistent with the Public Service Commission Disciplinary Guidelines.
