COVID-19: Fiji reports 1187 new cases in 24 hours; 11 deaths over five days

COVID-19 cases continue to be reported in four-digit figures for Fiji, with 1187 new cases reported for the 24 hours that ended at 8am today.

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services also reported 11 deaths for the period July 31 to August 4.

Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong says 387 cases are from the Western Division and 800 cases are from the Central Division.

In his COVID-19 update statement tonight, he also reported 1204 new recoveries since the last update, which now means there are 22,658 active cases; Central Division – 18,318 active cases, and Western Division – 4340 active cases.

Dr Fong indicated that seven of the 11 deaths over the reported period died at home in the Suva-Nausori containment area and they were all not vaccinated; and two were pronounced dead on arrival – a 50-year-old woman (not vaccinated) from Lautoka and a 21-year-old man from Malake Island in Rakiraki (received one dose).

The other two were retrieval cases:

  • a 78-year-old woman from Tailevu who presented to a medical facility in severe respiratory distress. Her condition worsened at the medical facility and she died on the same day (03/08/2021). She was not vaccinated; and
  • a 53-year-old woman from Nasinu who presented to the CWM Hospital Emergency Department in severe respiratory distress. Her condition worsened at the hospital and she died one day after admission (03/08/2021). She was also not vaccinated.

Some statistics provided tonight (as at 8am, August 4 (2021):

  • 1187 new cases
  • 11 deaths reported from July 31-August 4
  • 1204 new recoveries – this means there are now 22,658 active cases (Central Division – 18,318; Western Division – 4340)
  • 33,850 cases recorded during the outbreak that started in April 2021
  • 33,920 cases in total recorded in Fiji since the first case was reported in March 2020, with 10,848 recoveries.
  • 3 more deaths of COVID-19 positive patients (classified as non-COVID deaths)
  • 272 COVID-19 deaths recorded to date
  • 270 of those deaths recorded during the outbreak that started in April 2021
  • Seven day rolling average of COVID-19 deaths per day – 7
  • 142 COVID-19 positive patients died from the serious medical conditions they had before they contracted COVID-19 (classified as non-COVID-19 deaths).
