Fiji’s health teams are continuing their contact tracing of the movements of the 27-year-old case from Narere in Nasinu.
The Narere case was confirmed as positive for COVID-19 this morning.
Ministry of Health permanent secretary Dr James Fong highlighted the need for members of the public who own smartphones to download the careFIJI app solely for this reason – to assist in quickly identifying contacts of positive cases.
The young woman entered into quarantine on April 28 as a contact of one of the cases from Makoi.
Dr Fong said further investigations revealed the woman also had close contact with another case also from Makoi during a family gathering.
“That gathering is now potentially the source point of three cases,” Dr Fong said.
“It was only a small family gathering with members from a few different households, but that was more than enough to have national ramifications.
“It is why one of our first and most important health measures we introduced was to limit gatherings, of all sizes, everywhere in Fiji.”
The PS said contact tracing was now ongoing into the woman’s movements before being quarantined.
“… Unfortunately, she did not have the careFIJI app installed, so we are relying entirely on our traditional contact tracing methods.
“If she had the careFIJI app and had kept it on – this could all happen much faster.”
Meanwhile, her family members have been in quarantine from April 29 and at this time, they have all tested negative.
