WHILE hundreds of families enjoyed their day at the picnic spot in Nasilai beach, Tailevu on Tuesday, to welcome the New Year, cousins Terenika Matia and Una Bella were spotted selling watermelons in their wheelbarrow along the beach.

They said they were selling watermelons to help their families prepare for the beginning of the school year.

Matia, 14, said selling watermelons along the beach on New Year’s Day had become a norm for them.

They managed to sell 100 watermelons for $8 each from 7am to midday and one can work out how much they collected that day.

“We just want to help our parents, that’s why we are doing this. It is fun because you get to meet different people,” she said.

“I know kids like us are always shy selling like this but we are not. This is the least we can do to help our hardworking parents.”

Matia will be in Year 10 at Lelean Memorial School in Nausori this year.
