It is a time of joy and happiness for Suvavou villagers as they prepare to host the annual Tui Suva Volleyball Games at Suvavou grounds today.

Celebrating its 32nd year, the tournament, known as the Tui Suva Trophy, brings together 12 men’s teams, eight women’s teams, seven junior teams, and seven sub-junior teams for a day of friendly competition.

One of the tournament representatives, Tailasa Taka, stresses the importance of engaging young people in such events to provide them with a positive outlet amidst various social challenges.

He believes that the games serve as a platform for the community to reconnect and have fun together as they welcome the new year.

“It’s a day where everyone can come together, enjoy the games, and create lasting memories,” said Taka.

The tournament invites neighboring villages to join in the festivities and celebrate the spirit of sportsmanship.

He adds with the New Year’s Eve known as a time for partying and drinking, the event aims to provide a constructive and enjoyable alternative for the youths in the village.

“The competition has seen success over the years, with a growing number of teams participating and showcasing their talent in volleyball.

“It is a time where youths from villages come together to clean graves in the morning before engaging in the competition, followed by a festive lunch with their families.”

As the school holidays draw to a close, the tournament also welcomes children to participate in the Junior and Sub-Junior grades, encouraging their involvement in the sport.

Taka also mentioned plans are in place to improve the existing courts, with the aim of developing volleyball in the Suvavou area.

The organisers express gratitude to all the teams participating in the event and extend an invitation to all families to come together and enjoy a day of celebration.

They look forward to a successful event and a promising year ahead in 2026.
