THE 43-year-old man accused of killing a 16-year-old Salote Sikiti in Naqali Village earlier this month has been referred for psychiatric evaluation.
Yesterday Samuela Salusalu appeared before Chief Magistrate Josaia Waqaivolavola who ordered a full psychiatric assessment, citing concerns of unsound mind at the time of the alleged offence.
Mr Waqaivolavola also ordered that Mr Salusalu remain in custody.
The matter has been adjourned to January 5, 2026, for mention.
Mr Salusalu allegedly attacked the young girl with a cane knife, inflicting severe injuries that later led to her death.
It is alleged the incident occurred while the victim was returning home from a shop in the village.
The accused was arrested and remained in police custody as investigations continue.
The court heard the psychiatric evaluation is necessary to determine the accused’s mental state and fitness to stand trial.
No plea was taken as the matter is awaiting the psychiatric report.
