An 84-year-old man’s advanced age did not spare him from justice, as he was jailed for 13 years for sexually violating a primary school student 17 years ago,

The elderly man pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent assault and one count of rape committed in 2008 at Naboro, outside Suva.

Justice Waleen George said the man’s physical disabilities and age did not warrant leniency.

“You will also require special care once incarcerated,” the judge said.

“However, this court cannot turn a blind eye to your actions. You will need to be punished as a deterrent for other elderly ones to know that such actions cannot be tolerated at all.”

He will be eligible for parole after serving five years.
