Countries vow to fight climate change

FIJI joined 50 countries around the world to pass two resolutions to mitigate climate change with the help of ports and planning a cyber security program to minimise security risks.

Fiji Ports Corporation Ltd (FPCL) CEO Vajira Piyasena represented Fiji at the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) last month in Bali, Indonesia where more than 600 delegates representing 50 countries were present.

The international symposium had delegates discussing global issues of concern to the international maritime and port industries.

These topics included the effect of special economic zones on port’s growth, hinterland connectivity, the evolution of global shipping and shipping routes, maritime transport network and port innovation.

According to FPCL, the AGM voted to adopt two resolutions namely the “Contribution of Ports to the Mitigation of Climate Change and Its Effects” and “Planning Cyber Security Program to Reduce Security Risks”.

IAPH is the global alliance of the world port community, representing more than 200 ports and about 140 port-related businesses in 90 nations.

It handles more than 60 per cent of the world’s seaborne trade and nearly 80 per cent of the world container traffic.
