The counsels for the Supervisor of Elections (SOE) and Opposition member of Parliament, Niko Nawaikula did not do a good job, says Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
He was responding to the ruling by Chief Justice (CJ) Kamal Kumar before the Court of Disputed Returns on Mr Nawaikula’s case.
The CJ ruled on August 17, the SOE acted “wrongfully and unlawfully” in removing Mr Nawaikula from the National Register of Voters (NRV).
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the counsels representing the SOE and Mr Nawaikula did not talk about the implications on the constitutional breaches when making submissions.
“The ruling by the Court of Disputed Returns has, in fact, what I say set the cat among the pigeons,” he said.
“What really needs to be done in that situation, it needs to be corrected.
“The lawyers for honorable Niko and lawyers for SOE in fact did not do a good job.”
Under the constitution, he said, there should be free and fair elections.
But, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum added, how could there be free and fair elections when one had the ability to register their name more than once.
