Municipal councils will soon take over responsibility for maintaining footpaths, streetlights and natural waterways within town boundaries following a Cabinet decision.
The move will see these responsibilities transferred from the Fiji Roads Authority and the Ministry responsible for waterways to local councils.
Government said the reform is aimed at improving service delivery and responsiveness to community needs by placing responsibility with councils, which are the primary point of contact for residents.
The shift is also expected to streamline urban management, allowing for better coordination in planning, maintenance and infrastructure services within municipal areas.
Officials say the change will enable faster response to issues such as damaged footpaths, faulty streetlights and drainage concerns, while strengthening accountability at the local level.
The reform forms part of broader efforts to enhance efficiency and improve the delivery of essential municipal services.
