The Ministry of Local Government and the Fijian Elections Office are working together to plan the upcoming municipal council election.

When queried on an update regarding the election, Minister Maciu Nalumisa reassured the public, the election would effectuate but did not give a time frame.

“It (election) is going to happen but right now we are doing some of the groundwork,” said Mr Nalumisa.

The ministry is now working with the Supervisor of Elections on mapping the way forward.

He said the groundworks focuses on the fundamentals on election preparation.

“It is not a simple exercise its something we are trying to do now, and we are also trying to do well.

“It has been a long time since the last election which was in 2005.

“So, we want to do the basics right before we can call for the election.”

The ministry was mandated to deliver a successful election for the municipal council under the 2023-2024 National Budget.

However, according to earlier reports, the Ministry of Local Government permanent secretary Seema Sharma the electoral commission determines the municipal election date and indicated that elections would be held at the end of the year.
