Nasinu Town Council is cracking down on illegal dumping and improper waste disposal by issuing fines and warnings to home and vehicle owners this week.

It has issued Removal Notices for derelict vehicles located along Vatoa and FNTC Rd in Narere – and tracked and fined residents who piled rubbish overnight along the road in Nadawa.

“These abandoned vehicles are not only an eyesore but also pose serious health and safety risks, including mosquito breeding, obstruction of traffic, and environmental hazards,” the council said in a statement.

Garage owners and vehicle owners have also been warned that vehicles left unattended on public roads or road reserves is illegal.

“Failure to comply with removal notices will result in enforcement action, including fines, towing at the owner’s expense, and possible prosecution under council bylaws.

The council said derelict vehicles block access for emergency services and pedestrians, create dumping grounds for rubbish and hazardous waste, and lower the visual appeal and property value of the community.

“We urge all owners to take responsibility and remove these vehicles immediately.

As for the rubbish in Nadawa, the council said the irresponsible behaviour of residents is costly.

“Every illegal heap means extra trucks, extra hours, and extra ratepayers’ money.”

Enforcement teams visited the affected locations, tracked the offenders, and issued fines in line with council bylaws.

“Thank you to the residents who reported these incidents, your vigilance matters.

“Illegal dumping is a serious offence. Consequences include on-the-spot fines and potential court action for repeat or serious offences. Clean-up costs may be recovered from offenders.

The council pleaded with residents to work with them to keep Nasinu clean.

“Use the official collection schedules and designated bins. Do not place household or commercial waste on verges, drains, or vacant lots.

“Report illegal dumping with photos, time, and location via our inbox or the council channels.

“Let’s show pride in our streets, protect our environment, and respect our neighbours.”
