The Fiji Arts Council has been advocating for the Ministry of Education to provide an opening for a culture and arts centre.

Fiji delegation to the 13th Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture (FestPAC) official and council director, Maciusela Raitaukala highlighted this during an interview with The Fiji Times.

Mr Raitaukala said they had always pushed to have culture and arts as part of the curriculum because there was always a special place for culture in Fiji.

“We are hoping to continue to liaise with the Ministry of Education and the Curriculum Development Unit on how we can get culture, heritage, and arts to be part of the curriculum in schools,” he said.

Mr Raitaukala said they had the resource personnel all across the country — whom they referred to as the living human treasures — who were experts in their various art forms.

“We are willing to engage them to teach those special skills in schools.”

As far as the FestPAC is concerned, Mr Raitaukala said the festival was not only focused on artists but cultural officials as well, moving together as a region in safeguarding our culture and heritage at regional level.

FestPAC 2024 will be held on June 6–16 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
