CARTING aggregates from Viti Levu to the North has increased transportation costs for China Railway First Group (Fiji) Company Ltd.
Spokesman and manager public relations Donald Singh said the costs had been significant.
“China Railway First Group (Fiji) Company Ltd has managed to secure and source aggregates from suppliers on Viti Levu and we have taken a proactive approach through proper coordination and logistics, timely procurement and shipping across to Vanua Levu,” Mr Singh said.
He said materials on Vanua Levu varied and they were usually not of desired hardness.
“River aggregates are limited in supply, and also do not withstand weathering.
“We wish to thank the Government for understanding the problems faced by contractors like us and for helping address issues promptly.”
The transporting of sealing chips were now well co-ordinated.
“However, it is a costly exercise shipping or barging from Viti Levu.”
Last month, Minister for Infrastructure Pio Tikoduadua said roadworks had been delayed because of shortage of aggregates.
He stated some landowners refused to give gravel to road contractors and this had caused a delay.
