FIJI stands proud as a global leader in ocean conservation and sustainable tourism under the stewardship of the Coalition Government.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka made this remark while officiating at the inaugural Counting Coral Sculptural Coral Gene Bank at Castaway Island Fiji Resort last week.

The initiative is a partnership between the resort and U.S based non-profit organisation, Counting Coral.

“Our commitment runs deeper than preserving ecosystems,” Mr Gavoka said.

“These waters are our heritage. Our economy. Our future.

“This project embodies the goals set out in both the National Development Plan and the National Sustainable Tourism Framework.

“These policies aren’t just words on paper—they are blueprints for how we grow as a nation. They call for resilience, innovation, and inclusive progress.

“The National Sustainable Tourism Framework, in particular, lays out a bold vision: tourism that enriches lives, protects ecosystems, and supports local communities.

“Today’s launch brings that vision to life. It shows that environmental stewardship and economic opportunity can, and must, go hand in hand.

“This coral gene bank isn’t just a scientific achievement. It’s a national commitment made visible—a legacy in the making.

“What Counting Coral has created here goes beyond restoration—it’s restoration with soul.

“These structures serve as living sanctuaries—housing vulnerable coral species, rebuilding biodiversity, and engaging visitors in hands-on conservation. ”

Mr Gavoka said this was the third gene bank installed in Fiji.

“And with each one, we’re proving that science and creativity together can heal the reef—and reimagine how we protect it.

“This isn’t just a conservation project. It’s a declaration.

“A promise that we will protect what matters most—not only because we must, but because it’s who we are.”

The project, which was finished this month, was the result of a year of planning and fabrication, followed by a six- week underwater installation, and coral planting.

Castaway Island Fiji Resort general manager, Steven Andrews said they were committed to the protection and restoration of the land and marine habitats.

“From the very beginning we have understood that success as a resort goes hand in hand with respect of our natural surroundings and environment,” Mr Andrews said.

“Our island home is not just a place of beauty, it is a living breathing ecosystem that sustains us, inspires us and defines us.

“At Castaway, environmental stewardship is not just a slogan, it is a core value of our operations.

“We are proud to be part of the global zone initiative under Outtrigger Resorts and Hotels.”

Counting Coral founder Jolyon Collier said they hoped to continue this crucial work in the country.

” Fiji reefs are declining slowly,” Mr Collier said.

” There are some healthy reef systems here. But overall, with human activity, climate change, the industry of overfishing and lots of environmental impacts makes it very crucial that we continue this work in Fiji.

” I would hate to see the reefs of Fiji not being as healthy as they should be for next generation of people.”

Counting Coral sculptural coral gene bank are also installed at the seabed of Blue Lagoon Resort Fiji and Vomo Island Resort.
