IT is a new dawn for the Devo Babas rugby team as they prepare to compete in the 2026 McDonald’s Coral Coast Fiji 7s with a fresh lineup of players.
Last year, the team delivered a strong performance, making it to the quarter-finals before narrowly losing to the Fiji 7s team 12-19.
This year, the team faces a significant change in its composition as players have moved on to other teams or shifted priorities.
As a result, the Devo Babas now have 12 new young players who have been diligently preparing for the upcoming tournament.
Team manager Isoa Natui acknowledged that the need for new players stemmed from disciplinary issues with the previous squad, prompting a shift in the team’s dynamics.
He adds only two players from last year’s team remain, with the majority of the new recruits experiencing their first Coral Coast 7s.
“Few of our old players have joined, other teams, we have only two players from last year in the team,” said Natui.
“We have been in camp for two weeks, our preparations have been going on well, the new players are young players, they are focused to showcase their talent.
“This also presents a valuable opportunity for these young players to showcase their talent on a grand stage and rub shoulders with established rugby stars.”
Natui mentioned the team, comprising players selected from clubs, including representatives from Nadroga and Yasawa, has been in camp for two weeks, honing their skills and building camaraderie.
Despite the challenges posed by fielding a new team, the Devo Babas are focused on looking ahead and giving their best performance at the prestigious tournament.
“As we all know this is the biggest 7s tournament in Fiji, it will be a tough encounter, our aim is to do our best, we have faith in the team.”
While bidding farewell to former teammates who have moved on to other teams, the Devo Babas express their support and well wishes for their future endeavors.
They are grateful for the unwavering support of the players’ parents and the community, which has given their preparations for the tournament.
