THE Agriculture Ministry will bring in veterinarians from its Suva office to Lautoka to provide spaying and neutering services for cats and dogs in order to control the stray animal population in the city.
During a meeting between stakeholders at the Lautoka City Council chambers yesterday, some ratepayers called for a long-term solution to the issue of stray dogs in the city.
Agriculture Ministry representative Karishma Goundar said they were aiming to start this project by the end of this month.
“There are three vets in Suva and we will be bringing them to Lautoka to help with the spaying and neutering,” she said.
Lautoka Residents and Ratepayers Association president Maude Elbourne said manpower and finances were needed to control the stray dog population in the country. She said the association had sought assistance from organisations like Animals Fiji to help spay and neuter stray animals.
Animals Fiji co-founder and managing trustee Casey Quimby said they were happy to assist with additional veterinary services.
