MISS Nasinu Ailava Samuels values engaging with communities, campaigning against Western-imposed beauty standards, and cyberbullying.

The Miss Fiji Pageant contestant said her primary advocacy is disrupting Fiji’s beauty standards while combating cyberbullying and linking the two issues.

“While doing research, I found out that one of the main influences of cyberbullying is judging people based on their looks and that links to beauty standards,” she said.

“These were created by the Westerners when they first came to Fiji or the Pacific Islands as a whole. They have implemented this idea into all Pacific people that we have to look like them to be accepted.”

She expressed her desire to change societal perceptions, which often prioritise appearance over substance.

“You can be smart, you can have skills and the articulation to speak well, but if you don’t look the part, a lot of people will hate you. So, I want to change their mindsets to accept people despite their looks and see them for who they are.”
