Fijian consumers saw a notable drop in overall prices last month, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for August 2025 showing a 2.1% decline compared to the same month last year, according to new figures released by the Fiji Bureau of Statistics (FBOS).

Despite the monthly drop, the average annual inflation, measured over the 12 months from September 2024 to August 2025, stands at 1.0%, reflecting relatively stable prices over the year.

The CPI tracks the average change in prices of goods and services purchased by households nationwide, with data collected monthly from urban centres including Suva, Lami, Nasinu, Nausori, Lautoka, Nadi, Ba, and Labasa.

In August, the sharpest declines were seen in transport (-3.7%), driven by lower prices for motor vehicles and bus fares, and food and non-alcoholic beverages (-2.9%), where price drops were recorded across multiple categories including bread, cereals, fish, fruits, vegetables, oils, and beverages.

Other notable decreases were health (-1.3%), household furnishings and equipment (-1.2%), clothing and footwear (-1.1%), restaurants and hotels (-0.2%) and communication (-0.1%).

Price increases were recorded for alcoholic beverages, tobacco and narcotics (+1.3%),  Mainly due to higher prices for yaqona (kava).
