Rakiraki businessman and former politician George Shiu Raj says farmers are frustrated by the constant breakdown of the Lautoka Sugar Mill.

He said Fiji Sugar Corporation should crush the cane supplied to the mills during crushing season.

“Government has given millions of dollars to repair and maintain the (Lautoka) sugarcane mill,” Mr Shiu Raj said.

“The Rarawai Mill in Ba is also not working. Sometimes lorry drivers spend 36 hours outside the mill. This is one of the biggest problems I suppose. Farmers won’t supply sugarcane to the mill unless it is fixed.

“Today farmers are just like beggars and when we send trucks to the mill, we are told that the mill has a breakdown.

“This is not right. Government has done its part but the problem in the sugar industry now is the mill.”

FSC chief executive officer Bhan Pratap Singh said the Lautoka mill initially experienced some issues during the start of the crushing season.

“The mill is now operational,”Mr Singh said.

“We have addressed the concerns, and the mill is operating at the required capacity. We are committed to addressing issues raised by farmers and ensuring the smooth operation of the mill for the benefit of all stakeholders.”
