The Fiji Corrections Service is facing increasing pressure from overcrowding and a rising number of remand prisoners, acting Commissioner Auta Moceisuva has said.
Mr Moceisuva highlighted the growing number of remand prisoners as a key contributor to congestion within correctional centres.
He said the civil remand centre was currently operating above its approved capacity, housing 244 inmates in a facility designed for 200 beds.
“That is 44 more than the approved number,” Mr Moceisuva said.
He noted that the high number of remandees — individuals awaiting court proceedings or sentencing — was a significant factor behind the overcrowding.
To address the issue, the corrections service has begun discussions with the judiciary to explore ways to reduce the number of remand prisoners.
“We are in discussion with the judiciary on ways to reduce the high number of prisoners who are there, especially the remandees,” he said, adding that talks have also been held with the Chief Registrar on possible solutions.
Mr Moceisuva said overcrowding created operational challenges for officers who must manage large inmate populations in limited space.
He added that many inmates entering remand facilities were also dealing with drug addiction, which could lead to behavioural and health challenges for officers supervising them.
Despite the challenges, Mr Moceisuva said the corrections service continued to work with relevant authorities to manage inmate numbers and maintain safe conditions within facilities.
