Minister for Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau says the Government has taken steps to address the concerns of the people of Rotuma.

The change of schedule of the monthly freighter Goundar Shipping Ltd had affected the life on the island.

People were without water, electricity and essential food supplies and schools on the island were also forced to close because of the shortage of fuel.

“Please note that we have taken measures to address the problem,” Ro Filipe said.

“The problem was caused when a scheduled delivery was not fulfilled by a shipping operator. Government Shipping Services is addressing the issue now and fuel should be there this weekend if weather permits”

He said they were also reviewing the monitoring services to Rotuma.

“We are reviewing our monitoring of services to Rotuma and long-term strategies in consultation with the Rotuma Council, chiefs and people.”

Meanwhile, a Government Shipping Services (GSS) barge loaded with fuel supplies was on its way to Rotuma yesterday to address the water and electricity issues on the island.

The barge departed Suva at 7pm on Friday and was expected to reach Rotuma today (Sunday).

Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management Sakiasi Ditoka said they were closely working with all relevant stakeholders and key agencies of Government to address any other issue that may have arose because of the current situation.
